Laura & Tom’s Athol Hall wedding, Sydney
Laura and Tom were married at Sacred Heart in Mosman and had their reception up the road at Athol Hall, on a clear afternoon, in front of a hundred and twenty people, a good number of whom had flown in from the other side of the world to be there.
The morning ran in two places. Laura got ready with her bridesmaids at the Vibe in North Sydney. Tom was at the Middle Head Officers Quarters with his groomsmen. Neither side was rushing, which is rarer than it sounds. After the church, everyone drove on to Athol Hall.
The useful thing about Athol Hall is how much you get without going anywhere. We photographed the wedding party through the grounds and down on the little beach below the hall, harbour and boats behind them, and it cost almost nothing in time. No convoy, no forty minutes in a car, no standing around in a car park in heels. We kept moving and let people talk to each other instead of arranging them in rows.
Later Laura and Tom slipped off to Bradleys Head on their own, sun dropping, the Opera House and the bridge sitting across the water, and then went straight back to their guests. Inside, long tables and white flowers running down the middle of the timber hall. A hundred and twenty people in that room still feels close, especially late in the afternoon when the light comes through the windows, and later when the fairy lights take over. The speeches were funny. The dance floor filled early and stayed full, family from down the road and family who'd crossed the world for it, all in the same room until the end.
